Because I love you…

Because I said so…Blackbird

Don’t these words sound familiar to us, especially when we were growing up?  “Because I told you so” doesn’t sound like a reasonable answer for our kids, now does it?  Not for mine.  As I was growing up I didn’t like this answer so I was in trouble by questioning it.  It never made sense to me and it still doesn’t make sense.  As a parent, from time to time the phrase does cross my mind but then I ponder about its meaning.  There’s no meaning to it!  It’s a simple phrase of authority.  Yes, authority is important but not as a boss over our kids but as discipline to gear them through the right path.  I often find myself explaining the “why” behind telling my daughter what she needs to do or why we do certain things.  I summarized the reason in this poem.

Because I Love You…

(for my girls)

Do your best, not because I told you so but because I love you.

Study hard, not because I told you so but because I love you.

Do well in school, not because I told you so but because I love you.

Live life to the fullest, not because I told you so but because I love you.

Cherish the memories, not because I told you so but because I love you.

Forgive others, not because I told you so but because I love you.

Love who you are, not because I told you so but because I love you.

I love you, not because I told you so but because I love you.
