My name is Joanne Ureste and I am the Family Resource Hidalgo County Extension Agent for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension has one of the largest volunteer program in the state of Texas. I facilitate a volunteer organization called the Master Clothing Volunteers (MCVs). The MCVs is designed to develop leadership and teaching skills using textile techniques and garment construction, heritage sewing, and home décor. These volunteers are trained to work in our communities to assist youth, families, and community groups in learning how to buy, construct, and care for garments. Adults are welcome to attend the MCVs meetings, every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at our office located at 410 N. 13th Ave., Edinburg TX 78541.
I am happy to announced one of our volunteers will be hosting classes on the first Saturdays of the month, starting from September to December. I collaborate with the volunteers to enforce requirements. The requirements are held in place to ensure safety for the children and ensure the learning objective is met. The following requirements are as follows: Child must be 10 years and older (NO EXCEPTIONS), child must have an interest in sewing, and is encourage to bring their sewing kit: Fabric Scissors, Thread, Sewing Needles, and Pins . Extension has only 10 sewing machines, if your child has a sewing machines, please bring it.
We will be meeting with parents and children on August 26th (date not official) to get their feedback in child’s upcoming activities. We will also ask for donations of: universal bobbins, white or beige thread, and universal needles to continue our sewing programs in the future.
As you know our volunteers are not paid. They implement the class from their kindness of their heart. Please contact me by phone, e-mail, or in person if you have a concern with the program.
I have attached the flyer on the cover of the event. If you are interested in registering your child into the class, please call our office. Our office assistants would be registering your child. We will ask you for the following information: Parent’s or Caregiver’s Name, Child’s Name, Date of Birth, Primary Phone Number, E-Mail Address, Child’s Sewing level, and if Sewing Machine is needed.
