The 5K Sunchaser Series consists of four 5K races throughout the summer. The 5K race can be completed by running or walking the 3.1 miles. One of the great things about this series is that it can be a fun family event or a way to challenge yourself. This year all of the races are professionally chip timed! Plus, the first 150 participants that register will receive a free t-shirts.

I’ve run in the 5K Sunchaser Series the last three years, so I know that they are a great event put on by the McAllen Parks and Recreations. Last year the first race of the summer was called the Sunriser and I arrived for the event at 7:45 AM and there were a lot of people already warming up and stretching. There was plenty of parking and the event was clearly well-organized. I walked up to a table that was giving out race bibs and t-shirts to pick up my items. The coordinators of the event were also registering last minute participants.

Right before 8:00 AM, they gathered the participants at the starting line and asked competitive runners to come to the front of the pack. Then, right at 8:00 AM they started the race and everyone was off and going! The 5K went through the park and a nearby subdivision. There were several water stations throughout the race and all levels and abilities of runners were present. There were even a few children running the 5K. Best of all, there are moms pushing strollers and getting active!

Once you crossed the finish line, they provided plenty of fruit and water and handed out awards for the top finishers. For those participants who complete all four races of the summer, they are eligible for an overall series award.

Sign up for the 5K Sunchaser Series! If you register for all four races, the cost is discounted and you only pay $45 for all four races. Each race is $15 if you register ahead of the race.
