Last year, my husband and I celebrated our 5th Wedding Anniversary. We love gifting the traditional material and this year it was wood. My interpretation was to create wall art out of wood and thin rope, inspired by the concept of Mexican string art.

The same idea can be used for a fun Valentine’s Day gift for a loved one! Use this concept to write out their initials or the number of years you’ve been together. Spell out the word “LOVE” and adorn with a heart like this one. He or she will love it! [Related: Love Painting Craft]

These were created using hot glue and freehand wrapping over a pencil drawing I made on the base.

Starting from the middle, the rope was glued down and then in stretches of 5-6 inches at a time wrapped closely around that central shape.

It helped to lightly draw a large 5 to begin, and then the gluing began along the core of that block 5.

For the LOVE sign, the same was done with the heart – start with a wide “V” in the center, then wrap and shape along the way.

Tie it off at the end by cutting as close to a natural crease in the design, then tucking into itself with glue.

*Glue gun tip – I dislike the strings of glue that result from pulling away from a project after laying the glue down, so to prevent this, melt them off. Squeeze out a strip of glue, then pause where you ended, quickly lift the glue gun, and make a circular motion above the canvas. The tip of the glue gun will melt the connection and no more glue strings. (This feels like a youtube video in the making… perhaps.)
