DIY Fall Wreath

Fall is just around the corner and I’m so excited! Time to decorate with a DIY Fall Wreath!

I was trying to decide what to make first to start decorating my home, so a quick trip to Hobby Lobby to gave me some ideas for my fall wreath.

mainAs I saw all the beautiful fall floral and tiny pumpkins, my mind was made up to make a fall wreath this autumn. There were so many things to choose from, but I picked a just a few cute decorative items.

It was clear in my mind that I didn’t want to cover the entire wreath, though. I had in mind to add fall decor to about half of my wreath, and a cute bow on the right hand side along with the letter “G”  for my last name. I’ll show you what was purchased and how it was put together. Keep in mind, I’m not a professional wreath maker.

I bought these items (at Hobby Lobby):

  • Fall leaves -$4.99
  • Stem with orange little balls- $3.99
  • 2 inch pumpkin- $1.49
  • Smaller stem with orange crystal tiny balls (that I didn’t use) $2.49
  • Raffia bundle (I also didn’t end up using)- $3.99
  • Wreathe- $4.99
  • Orange ribbon was $6.99 but I used a 40% coupon- $4.20
  • Gray chevron ribbon- $3.99
  • Cursive letter ‘G’- I think it was about $5 (don’t remember the exact amount)
  • Orange spray paint- $5.79

So, I spent about $35 on my wreath since I ended up returning one of the florals and the raffia. I had purchased them at first because I wanted to incorporate them into my wreath, but I changed my mind because I didn’t want it to look too ‘busy’.  I’m sure I could have bought a cheaper wreath that was already made, but it’s more fun when YOU make it! Or make it a weekend craft with the kids. Make it as elaborate or as simple as you’d like. I already had the wire cutting scissors, and the glue. I ended up using my hot glue gun though. But if you don’t have a hot glue gun, you can use a glue called Mixed Media Glue. It works well for crafts and it’s about $6.00.

IMG_9784This is the spray paint I used to paint my G.  It may have looked better if the letter was white, but there was only black. I had to spray a thick layer to get the orange to look bright.

IMG_9795I used my hot glue gun to add the fall leaves to the left side of my wreath. I cut that piece of stem off.

I used my stem cutting scissors to cut off some little stems off the main stem. I just used about 4 little stems and glued them on my leaves. IMG_9798

I made sure to hide the ends of the stems behind the leaves so only the little balls show. IMG_9806

Next, I made a bow. I wish I knew how to make amazing bows, but hey I did my best. I cut a piece of each ribbon in the same length, glued the gray one on top of the orange one, and then  glued the two ends together. It looks like a bracelet. IMG_9807

I cut a 4inch piece of orange ribbon…

Cut that in half horizontally…IMG_9810

Pinch the bow in the center and wrap the orange little piece around the center. Glue it closed.IMG_9812

Cut two more pieces of orange ribbon and two more pieces of the chevron ribbon in the same length. Glue the cheveron ribbon on top of the orange…IMG_9813

Then glue the top ends of those pieces behind the bow.  Now it looks like a bow!IMG_9817

So, all I need to add is my letter.IMG_9824

This is what it looks like hanging on my front door. I debated wether to place the G on the right side underneath the bow, or in the center. My husband voted to place it in the center, so I did. I used twine because that was all I a had, but I think fishing line will be better since it is clear.IMG_9826

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial and made you want to go make one. IMG_9827

I just love that little pumpkin!

When do you start decorating for fall?
