Baby’s Quiet Book :: DIY Project

2

I wouldn’t call myself crafty, but I can use scissors, glue and on really good days I can bust out a needle and thread and make a homemade project. Over the summer, I was very inspired and decided to take on what I thought to be a very difficult craft project, a child’s quiet book. I was totally wrong! Although a quiet book looks like quite the task to take on, it is fairly simple and looks so beautiful and can keep children entertained!

A quiet book is exactly what it sounds like. It is an activity book made for children to keep them entertained that does not make much noise. These are perfect to take to church or anywhere that you want your child quietly occupied. To all the mommas out there who think that they cannot create something for their child because they are not crafty, I am here to tell you that you are wrong! With a little bit of patience, time, and love, you can create one of these fun quiet books for your child.

What you will need:Quiet book ingredients

• Felt! This material is super cheap and a little will go a long way. Have fun with the different colors.
• Scissors
• Felt glue. If you are looking for a quick way to put your book together or not familiar with a needle and thread, this is a super easy way to start out.
• Needle and “floss”. Floss is a thick type of thread (we used to use them to make friendship bracelets as kids).
• Scrap Ribbons, Velcro, zippers. These materials are totally optional, depending how creative and how advanced you are in the sewing department.

As previously mentioned, I’m not the most creative momma out there so I had to scour Pinterest and etsy for page ideas, but cut everything freehand. I did a quick sketch on a paper and then sort of just experimented

Lion (often confused with the sun)

This page was particularly simple. Just cut a large circle and glue scrap ribbon around the perimeter of the circle. Add a face and voila…a lion!

Monkey

There is no sewing done on this page to create the monkey. As previously stated, I did a sketch on paper, cut the felt, and then glued everything together. Easy peasy!

These last two pages involved a little bit of sewing and were the last pages I attempted.

Butterfly

I doubled up on cutting the wings of the butterfly. I filled the butterfly with cotton stuffing to give the page a little bit of depth. To sew the edges, I poked the needle through the felt, then poked it again on the same side as the initial poke and stuck my needle through the little loop that was made. This technique helps to seal the edges so that the stuffing doesn’t come out.

Fish

This is one of my favorite pages because I added Velcro circles to the fish bowl and the back of the fish so that the fish could “move” around the bowl.

A quiet book may seem like an overwhelming project to take on, but it really is quite simple and so fulfilling. The creative possibilities are endless! I began my quiet book journey with simple animals to fit my daughter’s age, but I am planning on starting on a newer one that is better suited for her now!  I encourage each momma out there to tap into their creative side…you might just surprise yourself at what you are able to make!
