Celebrate Swimsuit Season

Shopping for a new swimsuit can be a pretty daunting task.

After having two babies my body changed drastically!  With Nathan, my first born, I really didn’t know what to expect.  I read everything about anything on expecting mothers.  I felt somewhat prepared and so I ate healthy, exercised, and kept busy all nine months.

I’m sure it helped, yet I still managed to gain 45lbs!!  I also ended up with an emergency cesarean so I knew it would be harder for me to get rid of those extra lbs.  A combination of my age, breast-feeding, healthy eating, exercise and being a first time mommy helped get me back in shape.  Three months later I was able to fit into my jeans again!!  Keeping fit was not as difficult during my second pregnancy.  Ella, our rambunctious  little princess, totally keeps us active in so many different ways and even so I love to blame her for all my curves.

Along the way I learned a few things about swimsuits that I’d like to share.

Ladies keep in mind that we can still look and feel fashionable in a swimsuit.  I know a lot of women that don’t feel sexy if they don’t wear a two piece. Remember LESS IS ALWAYS MORE!

Here are a few steps that can help you determine what swimsuit is best for you:

  1. Know your body type – ( your shape) where you naturally distribute the most weight determines what swimsuit will look the best on you.
  2. Prepare yourself –  before going out to buy your new swimsuit take care of  all necessary hair removal, know your correct sizes and measurements and remember all stores require for you to try on swimsuits with undergarments on 🙂
  3. Choose colors and fabrics that highlight your best features and down play your least favorite parts.
  4. Choose a swim suit suitable for its primary use.
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help.

Athletic:  Show off those hours spent at the gym!!  Focus on feminine cuts and details.  Show off your toned lower half with embellishments at the hip and a tapered-back bottom.  Remember to soften your chest area  with padding, gathering or a girly print.

Small Bust/Thin & Petite: Try swimsuits that have a little more support.  Use a push up halter and triangle top, tops with ruffles and fringe will help add a size to your bust.  Plus, high-cut bikini bottoms will make your legs look longer.  They  help elongate your petite body frame.  You can also try  hip ties, cutouts that create an optical illusion of curves and ruching.

Plus size:  You want a swimsuit that has molded cups and tummy control panels that help to minimize your figure.  A swim suit that will keep your tummy and butt firmly in place.  You can also wear cover ups, there’s so many to choose from, and they’re so versatile as you can wear them with leggings for a night out.

Top heavy:  Be Patient, it might take a little more work to find the right swim suit.  You might be bigger on the top half of your body,  so you require two different sizes.  On a bikini  use a halter top with thick straps to show off your best assets and also to have good support.  Also, you might want to try a one piece with a plunging neckline and small floral designs.  It can totally be a pattern minimizer, especially if the fabric gathers at the waist it will create a flattering division between chest and hips.

Bottom heavy :  The more fabric your swimsuit has the bigger you look.  A swimsuit in a solid color that has a clean cut bottom portion is slimming.  Avoid busy prints and skirts with ruffles.  You can always add a great pair of swimming shorts over your swimsuit.  Try  solid color shorts like the ones am wearing here. you can choose any color you like. They are nice, comfortable and you can find them in all colors and sizes.

The glamorous retro look is trending this summer and always a timeless classic, and always a good investment piece.  I personally prefer a vintage look.

  1. Ahhh! Swimsuits! I have worn the same tank and swim shorts for the past couple of years, and this year I had to break down and buy something new. I wish I had this post when I was ordering! 🙂 I ended up purchasing from Lands End because they had so many choices for mixing/matching.

    • Deborah, right now its the perfect time to go swimsuit shopping. In the fashion industry summer is over already. so you can find swim suit pieces on sale for really good prices. target had separate pieces as low as $7 and so did old navy. 🙂
