Decorate Your Door for the 4th of July

I love when my door has a wreath on it!  For some reason, I really like walking up to my home and seeing a seasonal, festive wreath on the door. But wreaths aren’t exclusive to Christmas.  Over the years, I have proudly displayed wreaths that my Grandma created to fit every season and holiday.  So, when I moved to the Rio Grande Valley, which is about a 23 hour drive from my Grandma, I knew I’d have to learn how to do it myself.

I made my first attempt at wreath-making last year about a week before the Fourth of July.  My spring wreath was still hanging up and I wanted a patriotic wreath to take its place.  I had recently seen the idea of wrapping yarn around a Styrofoam wreath and I thought it sounded easy and inexpensive.  I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money in case my first attempt at wreath-making went terribly wrong.  My goal was to make a cute, patriotic wreath for under $10.

Supplies:

  • Styrofoam wreath-$3 from WalMart
    wreath
  • Chunky red, blue, and white yarn-$6 from Walmart
    yarn
  • Silver and red stars-$1 from Dollar Store
    stars
  • Nails-found in the toolbox at home
    nails

Tips Before Getting Started:

  • The chunkier the yarn, the better! Thin yarn will take too long to wrap and will make it harder to cover the Styrofoam wreath.  I learned the hard way because I bought sparkly, thin blue yarn and it didn’t work as well.
  • This is a time-consuming task, so plan on spending 3-4 hours wrapping the yarn around the wreath while catching up on your DVR shows.

Step 1:
Begin by wrapping red yarn around the wreath for about five inches, but keep the end of the yarn accessible to tie off later.  When you’ve reached five inches, cut the yarn and tie the two ends off at the back of the wreath.

Step 2:
Switch to white yarn and repeat the process described in Step 1.  Repeat this process 8 to 10 times switching back and forth between red and white yarn.

Step 3:
Using the same technique, use the last ten inches of the wreath to wrap blue yarn.  This will be the base for your stars.

Step 4:
Cut the Dollar Tree stars from their necklaces and nail the stars in to the Styrofoam wreath.

Step 5:
Hang the wreath on your door and…..Voila! You have a cute, inexpensive, and patriotic wreath to hang for the Fourth of July!

Tonya
Hi friends! My name is Tonya- a Midwestern girl who became a Rio Grande Valley transplant three years ago. I spent seven years as a second grade teacher. After completing my Master's in Reading and Literacy, I became a reading specialist for three years. After moving to south Texas, I became a stay-at-home mom for the first time. I've been married for ten years and we have three kids ages 9, 6, and 2. I love online shopping, Netflix, and running but nothing makes me happier than spending time with my family. Moving to the valley was a huge change but constant sunshine and great Mexican food has made it well worth it!
