5K Sunchaser Series Review

0

I’m a mom who sometimes needs an escape out of the house. When I began running, it was the perfect way to get in my exercise while also getting some much needed alone time! When I first began contemplating taking my running to a new level and actually adding some serious distance, I knew that I’d have to get out of my comfort zone and sign up for a race. So, last summer I signed up for the 5K Sunchaser Series put on by the McAllen Parks and Recreation.

The 5K Sunchaser Series consists of four 5K races throughout the summer. This 5K can be completed by running or walking the 3.1 miles. One of the great things about this series is that it can be a fun family event or a way to challenge yourself. This year all of the races are professionally timed!

The first race of this summer was called the Sunriser and was held on June 7 at 8:00 AM at Los Encinos Pool. I arrived for the event at 7:45 AM and there were a lot of people already warming up and stretching. There was plenty of parking and the event was clearly well-organized. I walked up to a table that was giving out race bibs and t-shirts to pick up my items. The coordinators of the event were also registering last minute participants.

Right before 8:00 AM, they gathered the participants at the starting line and asked competitive runners to come to the front of the pack. Then, right at 8:00 AM they started the race and everyone was off and going! The 5K went through the park and a nearby subdivision. There were several water stations throughout the race. All levels and abilities of runners were present. There were even a few children running the 5K.

Once you crossed the finish line, they provided plenty of fruit and water. They handed out awards for the top finishers. For those participants who complete all four races of the summer, they are eligible for an overall series award.

There is still plenty of time to run or walk in the last three races of the 5K Sunchaser Series. Each race is $15 if you register ahead of the race. If you register on-site then it is $25. You can register online at http://webtrac.mcallen.net. Walk-in registration can be done at Lark Community Center, Las Palmas Community Center, or Palm View Community Center.

Hints for Success:

  • Register a few days ahead of the race
  • Get there early
  • Drink lots of water the day before
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before the race
  • Start out slow and steady
  • Really go for it at the end!
  • Have fun!
