Camp Native: Family Camping 101

Camp NATIVE MARCH ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:

Families will visit the National Butterfly Center in Mission, TX to participate in Camping 101. Camping 101 is a beginner course for families who’d like to learn how and what to pack for a trip, campsite selection, tent set up, campfire safety, basic first aid and best practices. At the end of the day participants will be provided with S’mores!

Parents are encouraged to participate. A certificate of participation will be provided at the end of the course. Each student will be provided with FREE transportation, park entry, breakfast, lunch, and ranger pack. Ranger pack will include a t-shirt, water bottle, ranger journal, and other fun outdoor items. Items can be picked up the day of the event.

WHAT IS CAMP NATIVE?

The City of San Juan presents Camp NATIVE a FREE monthly nature based specialty camp for PSJA ISD students enrolled in 3rd-5th grade for the August 2016 – May 2017 school year. PSJA students from the City of Pharr, City of San Juan, City of Alamo are invited to attend.

Each month, students will be introduced to a new outdoor activity, they include: camping, geocaching, fishing, archery, and so much more….

Each student will be provided with FREE transportation, park entry, breakfast, lunch, and ranger pack. Ranger pack will include a t-shirt, water bottle, ranger journal, and other fun outdoor items.

RANGER PACK PICK UP
Ranger packs can only be picked up the day of the event. If you do not attend, you do not receive a pack.

Note: Only one ranger pack per child. Your child must bring their pack with them on every trip.

CAMP SCHEDULE:
Breakfast/Drop Off¬ 7:30 AM – 8:00 AM
Bus Travels to Park 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM
Camp Hours 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Bus Travels back to City Hall 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Lunch/Pick-UP 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM
Please drop off¬ and pick up your child on time. The bus will not wait for late children.

GROUND RULES:
* Each trip is limited to first 45 “new” registrations.
* Dress your child appropriately for outdoor activities (hat, Camp Native t-shirt, shorts/jeans, and close toed shoes)
* Staff will provide sunblock, mosquito repellent, and a group first aid kit.
* By enrolling, you are giving permission for photography of your child
* By enrolling, you and your child are agreeing to participate in online Camp NATIVE surveys.
* ONLY PSJA students and teachers are allowed to ride the bus. NO EXCEPTIONS
* Parents interested in joining their child will need to register as a volunteer, pass a background check, and provide their own transportation to the park. Call 956-223- 2350 to volunteer. Your paperwork must be submitted in person to San Juan Parks and Recreation Department by Friday, November 4 in order to attend. Call (956) 223-2350
