5 Ways to Naturally Fight Cold & Flu Season

5-ways-fight-cold-and-flu

Even though it may not feel like fall yet, cold and flu season is definitely upon us and with kids in school we know we can expect some sniffles and germs. With three kids in our house, it is important to take preventative measures to keep them all well.

1. Rest >>

Bedtime has certainly been a little easier to enforce with an earlier sunset. School-aged kids need at least 9 hours of sleep, pre-schoolers at least 10, and toddlers at least 11. Our wakeup time for the kids is 7:00 AM (at the latest, although they love to turn the lights on well before 6:30 AM), so that means our preferred bedtime is 8:00 PM.

2. Hydrate >>

This is important whether well or ill, but especially when recovering from a bout of diarrhea or vomiting. We always send our kids to school with a full water bottle and refill it when they get home. We serve water with every meal and keep cups within reach so they always have access. Did you know that staying hydrated can also help break up mucus? Hydrate.

3. Wash Hands Well >>

Our kids have learned the importance of washing hands, but we do reinforce this all the time. We keep step stools in both bathrooms to be sure they can reach the soap and the sink and wash before every meal or snack and when coming in from playing outside. One trick is to have the kids count to 30 or sing “Happy Birthday” twice through.

4. Use a Humidifier >>

Find a trusty humidifier to help your kids when they have congestion. We’ve gone through several over the years but they are really not a huge investment and have helped tremendously to help the kids, especially at night.

5. Natural Remedies >>

To ease symptoms when the kids start getting a cold, we are always looking for something safe we can give to the kids that is natural, safe, and effective. Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold ‘n Cough Day and Night Combo Pack with Natural Grape Flavor provides natural relief of common cold symptoms in children including coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and nasal and chest congestion and occasional sleeplessness.* Their products have multi-symptom relief without stimulant side effects. It’s alcohol-free, sugar-free, and dye-free, which we love, and all of my kids can use it since it is for kids 2 years old and up. We were happy to learn that it contains no Aspirin, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Pseudoephedrine or Dextromethorphan. The kids can get their rest without any sedatives and no next-morning grogginess. Hylands 4 Kids Cold n Cough Value Pack
