Finding Your Passion Outside Motherhood

0

Sometimes, after we become a mommy, we lose ourselves in the day-to-day humdrum of dirty diapers, potty training, and playdates. We often wonder, “Is this all there is to my life for the next 18 years?” A lot of us feel this way. We feel lost as to how to get back in touch with the world.

Which is why I’m here to tell you there is life after baby. Don’t get me wrong, we all adore our little ones, but we also long for a little time for ourselves. To get back out there and find our passion again— or pursue a new one! So, how do we go about finding our passion?  I have a few ideas that can help.

Finding your passion outside motherhood

1.  Enter the Workforce

work passionSome moms do not have the option to stay home and are already back in the workforce. If this is true for you, this may be your outlet.  Your career drives you. You crush goals daily, and are completely satisfied with your job.

For those mom’s who have stayed at home, going back to work can put you back in touch with the world again. You get to meet new colleagues, set goals, and feel apart of something outside of diaper duty. It doesn’t have to be a full-time job, but something you can throw yourself into and be proud of.

2.  Try a Vocation

Okay. You may think I have lost my mind, but this is 100% doable. You are probably thinking you have no clue what classes would you take, and so on. Well, ask yourself this question: What were you pursuing before becoming a mommy?  Is that something you’d still like to do, or do you want to take a completely different path?  This can be such an exciting and rewarding adventure. It will be hard, yes. However, you will have such a sense of accomplishment in the end.

3.  Be a mentor to a new mom

pregnant-motherThere are so many new moms out there that need help. Some of them have mothers who live in another state, or sadly aren’t alive anymore. They’re scared and don’t know how to do this whole “mommy” thing. That’s where you come in. You could guide her and give her the confidence she is lacking. Maybe she needs help learning how to breastfeed, figuring out how to get on a schedule, or maybe she’s embarking on the overwhelming journey of potty training. You’ve been in her shoes before; now you get to lead her and guide her in these areas. You may not get paid for it, but you’re so valuable to that new mom. It’s like getting paid, just in love.

4.  Let Your Creativity Shine

Being free to create things is so rewarding. There are so many areas you could venture into. Did you love reading and journaling before mommy-hood? Maybe you could turn those journaling ideas into blog posts and start your own blog.  Maybe even write a book. Do you like to keep your hands busy? Try making beaded jewelry, decorative wreaths or garlands for the house. You could even turn these new found passions into a job by selling your creations on a site like Etsy. How fun would that be? Creating something and making a profit? That’s a win-win situation.

5.  Work Out

running-573762_1280Before I had my son, I loved working out. After he got old enough to go to Mother’s Day Out, I took it upon myself to start training for a half-marathon. Throwing myself into that training was so rewarding. I never thought I could say I loved running, but I did. I also enjoyed lifting weights. There’s nothing more satisfying than getting healthy and feeling good about yourself.  I know some moms who even loved working out so much they began teaching classes at their local gym or mommy group.  Again, another great way to do what you love and get paid for it.
