Family Date Night Ideas

1

Once upon a time, two people fell in love. There was a courtship. Dating. Long walks and long talks. And many dinners for two. Fast forward to 2016 and this pair is now a house of five and we do family dates.

Dinners for two are mostly a thing of the past, and it is time we embrace it! So if you are preparing for a family Valentine’s Day, here are some fun ideas on how to spend it together!

Family Dinner

Cook a meal together and involve the kids in every step of the process, including setting the table, serving, and cleaning up.

Menu ideas:

  • Spaghetti with Meatballs (have them help with the timer, too!)
  • Homemade Individual Pizzas (we love ready-made crusts or dough from Breadsmith)
  • Grilled Paninis (assemble sandwiches and grill them on the stove)
  • Sparkling Grape Juice for the kids (if you’re serving wine)

Themed Desserts

Heart Shaped Cookies and Brownies :: Family Valentine Dates

Bake cookies and use heart cookie cutters to keep it all on theme. Cut the corner tip of a ziplock with frosting to write LOVE or get creative with patterns on each of them with your kids. An easy recipe for stiff frosting that will go on easily and harden is Royal Icing (usually whipped egg whites or meringue powder and powdered sugar).

Recipe ideas:

Another fun dessert is to cut out a paper heart, place it on top of a brownie, and make it snow! (Snow = powdered sugar siphoned through a sieve.) Here is an amazing lactation brownies recipe, too!

Game Night

Have a family game night. Include a round of questions and sharing about reasons we love and appreciate each other.

Games to play:

  • Bingo or Loteria
  • Checkers or Chess
  • Card games (Old Maid, Crazy 8, War)
  • Spoons
  • Charades
  • Puzzles (clear off the dining table and do one big giant puzzle as a family)

Family movie night! Order a pizza, cozy up in the living room, and watch a movie together as a family. Better yet, make the pizza together first, then enjoy it together fresh out of the oven!
