Holiday Decorating on a Dollar Store Budget

Anyone else feel this way about their home? We’ve been in our house now for almost two years and as much as I want to have every room decorated and looking like it should be in a magazine the reality is my interior designers are two little boys named Ryan and Chase and well their idea of decorating usually involves Legos and Transformers. So until they are older — much, much older I’m going to put that on the back burner.

My two little ones do however seem to love seeing our house decorated here and there for  just about any holiday. So although I know some people like to choose either Halloween or Fall I try to do both. Crazy I know because sometimes by the time I get around to doing it there’s only a few weeks before the actual holiday but the kids do really love it. (Check out local pumpkin patches.)

What mama doesn’t like though is how expensive decorating can get? Does anyone else feel like if you really want it to look nice you have to be willing to spend half your monthly budget at Hobby Lobby or volunteer to work there on your time off in exchange for some of their amazing pieces? This year I decided to give myself a little challenge — take $20 (not a penny less, not a penny more), head to the nearest Dollar Tree during nap time and get enough supplies to get our entryway table “Halloweenified.” Yes, I just made up that word.

A couple of weekends ago I sneaked out on a Saturday afternoon at naptime. Limited time and limited budget (#momlife) I hit up our nearest Dollar Tree.

If you haven’t been to one lately it really is Halloween central in there. From eyeballs to skeletons to zombies they seem to have it all. I grabbed myself a shopping basket and started loading up. I’ll be honest I didn’t have a picture of exactly what I wanted it to look like before I walked into the store but once I walked in there my mind starting turning. You really can find some great pieces for only $1 and can sometimes find yourself with a little or a lot more than what you actually need. (Read more pumpkin decorating ideas here.)

After about half an hour I found myself dizzy from perusing the aisles one, two, three and ten times. I also had a basketful of goodies to take home though. I was able to get some cute foam pumpkins for my boys to decorate, skeleton garland, deco mesh in various colors, foam gravestones, lace placemats and some other items I thought would fit well on our table ad some of the pieces that we already have on there. Another big plus for me was that all the items were “kid-friendly.” Nothing was breakable which is always something I look for when decorating around the house. I’m not going to lie I may have also had another basket filled with a variety of other items that I somehow “needed” once I walked through the dollar store aisles.

Luckily when I got home my boys, my husband and the dog were all still napping so I started to put things together. To my surprise it all came together quite easily and effortlessly.

Not bad for $20 right? I had my boys work on their pumpkins after naptime and added them to the table when they finished. Remember up there when I was honest, well here’s another one for you. If you walked into our home today of course it doesn’t look like the picture because with two kiddos under 4 years old things are likely to get “repositioned.” The first few days I did follow them around and move things back and then after day 3 I decided to take Elsa’s advice and “let it go.”

If you’re kiddos go to school and their classes are doing goodie bags for Halloween I would highly recommend stopping by your local dollar store for items to fill them with. They had some great books, activity books and toys that I’m sure kiddos would love.

Would love to see what your holiday décor looks like!
