DIY – Cinco de Mayo Maracas

2

I’ve always enjoyed crafting.  That doesn’t necessarily mean I’m very good at it or that all my attempts are successful.  I’ve had many “Pinterest Fails” in my day.  I love crafting because it lets me express my creativity and fills me with a sense of accomplishment!  Now that I have a wonderful kiddo, I want to pass on the coolness of creatively crafting.

As you may (or may not) know, Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner.  Although many people believe May 5th is Mexican Independence Day, it is just a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride.  Pre-motherhood days, I may have been celebrating with a cold beverage, but nowadays, we are celebrating with DIY – Cinco de Mayo Maracas!  This homemade instrument is sure to entertain your young ones for hours.

This craft is especially easy because it can be done with items you probably have at home.  Also, the sky is the limit as to what you can use to create your one of a kind maracas.

Materials Needed:

  • Small empty box (I used a crystal light box)
  • A plastic spoon
  • A few dry beans or small rocks
  • Tape (preferably masking tape)
  • Markers

  1. Line the exterior of box with masking tape.  Don’t tape the bottom side just yet!

2.  Let your child release their inner Picasso!

3.  On the non-taped side, stick the spoon into the box and slip the handle of the spoon through the pre-made box slit.

4.  Place dry beans or rocks inside box.

5.  Close the box.  It will not shut completely due to the spoon being inserted.

6.  Tape down the opening where the spoon is.  **Beans/Rocks may pose a choking hazard so make sure to tape the box properly**

Even mom’s can participate in the fun!

How’s that for an easy-peasy Cinco de Mayo craft?

I hope your kiddos enjoy and don’t drive you too crazy with all the sweet music they will be making!
