Leaving the Littles Asleep in the Car Seat … an Old Habit That Must Die, Hard or Not!

0

It seems like a no-brainer; infants sleep, car seats are safe. Why would you dare wake them from their precious siesta once you’ve arrived at your destination?! … well, wait for it. Wait for it. Apparently, car seats ARE safe … for CARS, that is! And cars ONLY! That’s right, say what?! I know! And if you’re one of those persons who is guilty of leaving that precious little bundle of joy sleeping away in their car seat (out of the car), don’t feel bad. You’re not alone. In fact, I’ve done it before. I did it with my little booger boy when he was an infant. And I know I did it with my friend’s little one also (sorry friend! I didn’t know!).

Numerous deaths have occurred in infants due to improper use of car seats outside of the vehicle.  What researchers have found is that “infants can experience periods of low oxygen saturation,” according to Medical News Today, causing obstruction to the airway.  One explanation is that outside of the base, the car seat is at a level where the infant’s head deems too heavy for its more fragile neck, and tilts forward, restricting the necessary amount of oxygen into the infant’s system. So that’s why those little levels are important in car seats?! I always wondered. Well, need not wonder any further … according to this little handy Car Seat Safety Check (Mistake #4), infant seats must be at a 45 degree angle.

So, now that you know … it’s a no-brainer! That old habit of leaving those littles asleep in the car seat once they’re out of the car, it’s going to have to die!  No matter how peaceful they look!

Call me snickelfritz! ...German, for “rowdy child”. It was a nickname given to me at the tender age of 11 by an old friend of the family; he swore it was a term of endearment! 19 years later, and the term still fits. And quite well, I might add! I’m your typical serving of of rowdy,…with a shot of social grace, and a dash of compassion – all on one plate! A mommy to an ever-growing 7 year old and fiance to a phenomenal man, I am happily lost in this beautiful bliss of chaos called life. I live for… …chaotic mornings and bedtimes with my sweet sweet baby boy! (he’s not a baby anymore; I know. but he is MY baby!) …blissful disagreements with my imperfectly perfect fiancee (oh yeah, I’m engaged. AHH!) …and days full of silliness on the job with my most favorite siblings (my only siblings! hEE hEE)! With my brother at JD’s Farm and Ranch and with my sister at Then Comes Paper.
