Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) is this coming Sunday!  Quite a few people “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo by going out to a restaurant for margaritas and good Mexican cuisine, but do we really know what we are “celebrating”?  Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, a national holiday in Mexico which honors the Mexican Army’s victory in 1862 over the French.

In 1861, Mexico declared a temporary suspension on the repayment of foreign debts, and English, Spanish, and French troops invaded the country. By April 1862 the English and Spanish had withdrawn, but the French, with the support of wealthy landowners, remained trying to establish a monarchy. On May 5, 1862, a poorly equipped mestizo and Zapotec force defeated French troops at the Battle of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City.  The fighting continued and the French were not driven out until 1867, but the victory became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination.

Cinco de Mayo has turned into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.  Traditions include parades, mariachis, and street festivals celebrated across Mexico and the United States.
